Treasuring Scripture

Series: One-Off

Speaker: Worship & Youth Pastor Nathan Miller

Scripture: 2nd Timothy 3:16, Matthew 6:7, Matthew 11:27

Even if you don't feel it since the Bible says so its true no matter what

You don't need to be speeding through the Bible in a year

The Bible’s chapters are deliberate

  • The apostles were appointed by Jesus himself and their writing was essential and deliberate, it was not random

  • 2nd Timothy 3:16 all scripture is arranged out by God

  • The 27 books of the new testament are the same amongst all denominations over 2000+ years

  • They did not need to write down until they had to When they were not longer going out and still evangelizing

  • Paul said over 500 people saw his resurrection and told those who did not believe him to go ask them they're still alive when he was writing the new testament

How historic Israel used to memorize, learn, and apply scripture

  1. Reading it publicly

  2. Memorizing it

  3. Singing it

  4. Using it to determine what is true or false

2 Timothy 3:16

  • It equips you, makes you profit from it, and gives you life, as it's all breathed through God and he has the breath of life.

What if I don't understand it when I read it?

  • Maybe it's not meant for us to fully understand all it initially

  • The Gift of Teaching is a real gift and if there is a gift of teaching there will be times we need someone to teach us what Scripture means. This is especially true when it comes to things in the Bible we don’t understand

  • Making use of the Gifts God has given us is healthy

  • Praying over our understanding, view, and/or perspective about Scripture is greatly beneficial.

  • Savor the parts we know and thank God for what we have been blessed with understanding

Two great places to start when beginning to read Scripture

  1. The four gospels, Matthew Mark, Luke, and John

  2. The psalms

Our battle is spiritual and being able to know some of the Psalms can help in our heart posture

We should be praying every day

In Matthew 6:7 “... give us this day our daily bread…”

It's not weekly or every other day but daily we acknowledge him daily and know he is the source

Advice:

Spend the first half of your daily prayer time reading scripture

  • The best place to be while reading scripture being submissive

Different ways of engaging with Scripture

  • Reading

  • Listening

  • Singing/Memorizing

God enjoys speaking through the Bible as its his word

Matthew 11:27
