The Holy Spirit Person
What does it mean to be a spiritual person? Can I be the spiritual person Paul is talking about here?
Paul’s writing themes:
The gospel
The Kingdom of God
Life in the spirit …the Holy Spirit is within you
Spiritual is often used two ways in our culture.
One is to pray more, think of God more, and do more holy things.
The second way is that there are two classes of Christians. Those that are spiritual and those that are not.
Paul is trying to correct their thinking and take them back to the basic things of the Gospel. That Jesus , the Savior of the world, came and died for the sins of many. If you have received Christ, you are counted among the saved, not the dead.
The foolishness of the world is the wisdom of God.
The Gospel is not about you. It is for you. It’s about Jesus Christ.
There are not two classes of Christians. There are two classes of people.
Those of the Kingdom of God
Those outside the Kingdom.
We have the Holy Spirit who is there for all of life. Col 1:13-14 is the map of our world. The domain of darkness and then the kingdom of light
The natural man is missing the Holy Spirit. That is why the natural man thinks it’s foolishness for Christ to die.
Which kingdom are we going to live in ?
1 Cor 3:3 –Fleshly: carnal, jealous, arguing, live out your desires, not having self control, walking like mere men according to their flesh
If the Corinthians hadn’t messed up we wouldn’t have this wonderful letter to learn from.
What does it mean to live like a mere man? Living like practical atheists. Choosing what we do and don’t do from our own minds. Not living according to the Spirit.
What does it mean to be a spiritual person?
To have the Holy Spirit
Taught by the Spirit
Have the mind of Christ
James 1:5
God gives us wisdom, most of which is found in Scripture. But the Holy Spirit person appraises all things. Living in the Holy Spirit. Thinking in the Holy Spirit.
Appraises: examine something in order to judge and determine its truth.
There is hope. Galatians 5:25–Walk in step with the spirit
How can we live as a Holy Spirit person ?
agree with the gospel, believe in the gospel, trust in Jesus for your salvation
we need to be living like citizens of the kingdom, we get to participate in the kingdom of God, kingdom people live to please the King
We don’t do it alone. We have the Holy Spirit. He helps us live according to the kingdom.
What’s your priority? Are you living in your own kingdom? Are you trying to build your career or get more money?
How you go about it matters if you’re doing it your own way.
If you live in God's kingdom it changes the way you live and do things.
It’s a relationship with the Holy Spirit, not a checklist.
What is our response ?
To change our thinking and to think God's way. Not doing things our way but to do things with Him.
