What to Believe

John the Baptist made it his business to go into town and call out political leaders for moral and political failings. Christians have a responsibility not to remove themselves entirely from politics.

True devotion to Scripture will drive believers into the political discussion.

The Matthew 14:1-3 passage parallels the parable of the weeds Jesus told in Chapter 13.

Herod and Herodias parallel King Ahab and Jezebel, but in their story, the bad guys win for a time.

Herod did what he did with John the Baptist due to the fear of man, even though he believed John the Baptist was a man of God (He believed that John the Baptist may have risen from the dead! Fear of man is an enemy of the Christian life. Fear of man is also how the Western Church is often silenced.

How to Obey and Walk Intimately with God

Confess your fear of man and ask God to give you opportunities to bear witness to the Gospel and speak truth to others.

Pray for boldness to be expressive and to be known, as a worshipper of God, a disciple of Jesus, and a person who lives a righteous life.

Prepare to know and speak the truth as a citizen of our country by first pursuing truth, by getting out of your personal echo chamber. Recognize that the internet will spoon-feed you what it knows you want to hear, so seek out information from both sides of the news and apply biblical truth. Consider some of the following resources:

  • Tangle, a podcast that shows reporting from both the right and left sides. Feel free to listen to or ignore the host’s clearly labeled opinions.

  • Ground.News, a website showing right/left reporting, with a feature showing blind spots that one side or the other is not reporting. Requires subscription:https://ground.news/subscribe

  • The Pour Over–A podcast mixing news with prayer and scripture. You can also sign up for the daily newsletter to receive a written version by email.
