Sacred Songs - Psalm 19
Series: Sacred Songs
Speaker: Lead Pastor Dustin Aguilar
Scriptures: Psalm 19 | Romans 1:19–20 | Proverbs 3:12
What We Believe:
Psalm 19 is a beautiful piece of poetry with three main sections: the testimony of creation, the testimony of God, and the testimony of David.
The Testimony of Creation — Psalm 19:1–6
David probably spent a lot of time gazing up at the sky, which declares God’s glory. It is the handiwork of an awesome Creator.
See also Romans 1:19-20. Creation reveals God’s “power and divine nature.”
Nature is powerful, but unknowing, uncaring, and oppressive.
The Testimony of God — Psalm 19:7–11
God makes Himself known through the giving of the Law.
The Law has many wonderful benefits.
It gives life to the soul.
It’s good for the mind and heart.
It’s sweet like honey and rewards you.
It keeps you safe.
God is not like the ancient pagan deities that required child sacrifice. He is above all gods and creation.
As His children, we are to be set apart by keeping the Law.
Yet it is impossible to keep the Law perfectly.
So God sent Jesus to pay the penalty for our sins on the cross.
And now His children are indwelt with the Spirit of God and sent to the Ends of the Earth to set people free from the slavery of other gods.
Though it is human nature to resist the Law, lawlessness does not equal loving. The Law actually reveals that we serve a very personal God. Proverbs 3:12 says, “For the LORD reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.”
God’s laws are loving, and His precepts make him personal.
The Testimony of David — Psalm 19:12–14
Similarly, conviction of sins is God’s kindness to us.
Hidden Faults – You are guilty, but you cannot see your own sins.
Presumptuous Sins – You know your deeds are sinful, but you do them anyway.
We cannot control much in life, but we can choose to have humility towards our hidden faults and obvious sins.
How to Obey:
Give people the right to speak into your life to reveal hidden sins.
Take responsibility for your presumptuous sins.
How to Walk Intimately With God:
Acknowledge that conviction is good.
Accept the invitation to intimacy with God by confessing sins.
Make things right with others and the Law to be set free.
