Scripture:

Acts 9:10-19, Acts 13:9, Gen 22:18, Gen 12:3, Is 49:6, Gen 22:1, Ex 3:4, I Sam 3:4, Rom. 15, I Cor 3:12, Gal 2:10, James 2:16, James 1:27, Heb 13:3

The role of missions:

Jesus promises that He will show Saul/Paul how much he will suffer for Jesus’ sake. A real call of God always comes with His power, presence and suffering.God did not change Saul’s name to Paul. Saul is his Hebrew name, meaning one who is prayed for.

Paul, meaning small, is the Greek name that he used among the Gentiles. When Paul became the apostle to the Gentiles, he used the Greek version more and more, because it was Gentile-friendly.

God is the first missionary. He comes to us. The purpose of the chosen people, the Jews, was to be missionaries to the world, showing God’s love and bringing God’s salvation.  Ultimately, God chose the quintessential Jew, Saul, to be a missionary to the Gentiles.

Acts 9:10 records that Ananias responded “Hineni”--Here I am or Behold me, when God called him. The word is a statement of submission and readiness. See also, Gen 22:1, Ex 3:4 and I Sam 3:4.

What is the call?

To reach the unreached

To break new ground

To build on the foundation

To remember the poor (disenfranchised, widows and orphans, those in prison, the unborn, etc.)
