Scriptures:

Matthew 11:25–30

Proverbs 4:7

Proverbs 3:5

Proverbs 30:1b–4

Luke 10:21–24

What We Believe:

  • To those who feel they are just not doing enough, Jesus offers a comforting and encouraging invitation in Matthew 11:25-30.

  • Jesus is speaking to the crowds, and has just finished pronouncing woes to unrepentant cities.

  • In verse 25, He thanks the Father for hiding spiritual truths from the wise and understanding and revealing them to little children.

  • Here “the wise and understanding” refers to those who trust in their own understanding. Yet, God is searching for those like little children, who trust in the Lord with all their hearts (Proverbs 3:5).

  • In a major plot twist, God hides spiritual truths from the wise and understanding, and puts them on the bottom shelf where everyone can access them—even small children. However, you have to stoop down to get them. This is the upside down way of the kingdom.

  • In verse 28, Jesus makes a glorious public invitation to the weary. He invites the weary and heavy-laden to come find rest in Him, revealing the Father’s heart.

How to Obey:

  • Even though we say we believe in grace, we can feel like we are not doing enough.

  • We may be enslaved to sin or struggling with the burden of perfectionism.

  • In this passage, Jesus invites us to humbly draw near to God with our heavy burdens.

How to Walk Intimately With God:

  • Draw near to God, and let Him remove your heavy burdens.

  • Receive the grace you do not deserve.

  • Declare that Jesus is King and walk in freedom from sin and condemnation.
